DOWN TO THE RIVER TO PRAY

J'ai entendu ce chant la première fois dans le film « O Brother, Where Art Thou? » de Joel Coen. On assiste au rituel du baptême par immersion, tel que pratiqué par les églises baptistes du sud des États Unis. Dans le film, les nouveaux baptisés chantent ce chant en attendant le moment de leur immersion. On ne connait pas exactement l'origine de cet hymne chrétien populaire, on croit qu'il aurait été composé par un esclave afro-américain. La plus ancienne version connue de la chanson, intitulée "The Good Old Way" a été publié dans « Slave Songs of the United States » en 1867. Une autre version, intitulée " Come, Let Us All Go Down," a été publié en 1880 dans « The Story of the Jubilee Singers »; Cette version se réfère à une vallée plutôt que d'une rivière. Anciennement, beaucoup de chants d'esclaves contenaient des messages codés pour s'échapper. Ils marchaient alors dans la rivière "in the river" pour semer les chiens.  Dans d'autres versions, "in the river" est remplacé par "to the river". L'expression «to the rivière" est préférée pour les cérémonies de baptême en plein air. Cette interprétation de Alison Krauss m'a enchanté et je voudrais le partager avec vous.
